The Texas AgriLife Extension Service is located at 3033 Bear Creek Drive, Houston, Texas 77084, and the orchard is located to the right of the building. It is absolutely wonderful, full of huge trees, grapevines, and trellises, with seemingly countless cultivars represented. In the span of just 15 minutes I saw diverse varieties of pears, figs, pomegranates, peaches, citrus, apples, persimmons, jujubes, bunch grapes, muscadines, and blackberries. I wish I had had more time to examine the labels on the trees. I have a requested a map of the orchard so the next time I visit I can have a better appreciation of what I am seeing.
I would encourage anyone interested in growing fruit at home to pay the orchard a visit to see how big and beautiful these trees will be at maturity. Please bear in mind that just because there may be fruit on the trees, this is not a free you-pick operation. Please ask permission before picking any fruit or taking cuttings, and leave plenty for others to enjoy as well.
