Case in point, the neighbors catty-corner behind me have a huge satsuma tree (probably Owari), that produces tons of fruit every year. They didn't protect it at all during the bad freezes last year, and it still produced a ton of fruit. And what's worse, the family has two kids! I can't understand why those kids aren't all over that tree.
Another house we pass when we walk the dog has a huge grapefruit tree. I don't know what kind it is, but I've tasted the fruit and it is delicious. It's slightly pink, just a little tart, and very juicy. If I had that tree I'd have all the grapefruit and grapefruit juice I could want, with some to share. But the owners don't pick the fruit. It just falls to the ground and rots every year. I pick up a few fallen fruit every now and then.
The hard freeze this past week ruined all the fruit in both trees. I just can't understand people who would waste such good fruit. If they didn't want to pick it for themselves, they could at least pick it and give it to a charity. Heck, they could pick it and give it to me! Next year, I'll have to go knock on their doors and just ask if I can pick the fruit. Anything would be better than watching it be wasted.
